If it hadn’t already been swiped by a bunch of old metallers from England, Iron Maiden might be the perfect name for Toronto’s Pony Da Look – four anguished damsels who’ve been crafting Middle Ages-meets-new wave since their 2002 self-titled debut.
Spewing forth dirgey, organ-driven electro about contemplative sorcerers and babies’ craniums in convincing mockney, the Kraftwerk-cum-B52s-inspired quartet have little new to say on their third disc. A couple of shined-up crowd favourites are chucked in to bolster this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it offering.
Novelty status isn’t always a terrible thing, mind you – something Sloan, who revived label Murderecords to release the album, seem to have realized. Described as “witch music, for and by witches” by PDL drummer Rebecca Mendoza’s boyfriend, bassist Chris Murphy, Shattered Dimensions also makes suitable listening for wizards.
