by Bill Pearis

Sloan, who celebrated Twice Removed last year, have a new 7" out today that celebrates the band's hardcore upbringing. The two loud-fast songs -- one by Chris Murphy, one by Patrick Pentland -- can be streamed below. It's being released at noon today as a limited edition package that also includes a digital-only covers album featuring tracks originally by Minor Threat (whose promo pic is paid homage to on the cover, above), Circle Jerks, the Nils, 7 Seconds and more (tracklist below), plus a t-shirt showing what Sloan might've looked like if they'd been a band in 1985. There's only 500 copies of the 7" being pressed and you can order from their website.

In addition to the single stream, there's also video of Murphy and Pentland talking about the project.

Sloan Go Punk: Can-Rock Icons To Release A Hardcore Record

--taken from: Huffington Post

by Jason MacNeil

Hardcore fans of Sloan will enjoy news the band's releasing a limited edition 7" vinyl single "Hardcore Package" that also includes a covers album of classic hardcore punk songs.

According to the band's official site, the package includes the vinyl single with two new songs entitled "Jenny" and "It's In You, It's In Me." Meanwhile, perhaps the big score is a bonus digital download featuring "songs of the bands that were soundtrack to Sloan's youth" and date from 1978 to 1984.

The album is led by three Angry Samoans covers ("Gas Chamber," "Gimme Sopor" and "Hot Cars") along with two from 7 Seconds ("Bully" and "This Is The Angry"). Minor Threat, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Circle Jerks and The Descendents are also covered on the album.

"We recorded it actually a while ago," singer Chris Murphy says of the vinyl in a YouTube clip. "My song 'Jenny' I wrote in 1988 or something and recorded it in 2009."

The other song Patrick Pentland wrote and "took about two years or a year and a half to come up with the lyrics for it as you do with hardcore punk."

The "Hardcore Package" also includes a "Sloan Circa 1985" t-shirt with each of the four members included on the front.

The single goes on sale tomorrow at noon Eastern through the band's site and both songs can be heard on the band's site.

Sloan are currently off the road from touring behind their latest studio album "The Double Cross." The group are slated to play the CBC Music Festival next month at Toronto's Echo Beach alongside Sam Roberts Band, Kathleen Edwards and others.

Sloan release hardcore punk single and cover compilation

by Tyler Munro

This isn’t a misprint: Sloan are putting out a series of hardcore releases tomorrow. First and most notably is a new seven-inch that features two new, punk-inspired originals. One of its tracks, “Jenny,” was unveiled last week after the band hit 20,000 Twitter followers.

(sidebar: they should have way more than 20,000 followers)

It’s their own take on Minor Threat’s caustic brand of punk, as evidenced by the Ian Mackaye-ish vocals and album art, which reinterprets one of the iconic punk band’s most well known images. On the b-side of the seven-inch is “It’s In You, It’s In Me,” which falls somewhere between the The Descendents and the Offspring; in either case, it’s a sharp turn from Sloan’s usual sound.

All of this is a celebration of their roots, one which culminates tomorrow with the release of a digital covers album that will see the band taking on songs by 7 Seconds, Circle Jerks, Bad Religion, Black Flag and, yes, Minor Threat and The Descendents, too.

The new 7″ can be preordered tomorrow for $25, which at first seems expensive until you realize it’s limited to 500 copies, is hand-numbered and comes with a rare, cool as hell t-shirt. Grab a copy at SloanMusic.com.

--taken from: Exclaim!

by Alex Hudson

Over the past two decades, Sloan have made a name for themselves as one of Canada's most beloved power-pop acts, but it turns out that they've also got a major penchant for hardcore punk. The band have announced a new package including two original hardcore tunes, plus a digital covers album.

The two original songs are called "Jenny" and "It's in You, It's in Me," and they appear on a 7-inch in a limited-edition pressing of 500 hand-numbered copies. The former is filled with ferocious power chords and hollered vocals, while the flip is of the more pop-punk variety.

Listen to both songs at the bottom of this page, along with a lyric video for "Jenny" and an informative trailer about the project. In the clip, Chris Murphy notes that he wrote "Jenny" in 1988.

The 7-inch comes in a package with a T-shirt and a downloadable 12-song covers album. This is made up of some of the band members' favourites hardcore tunes from their youth, including songs by Bad Religion, Minor Threat, Black Flag and Circle Jerks, plus three tracks by Angry Samoans and two by 7 Seconds.

The package costs $24.99. It will be available to pre-order from SloanMusic.com starting on April 30.

10 ‘Rita and Friends’ musical memories

--taken from: Aux (see the rest of the list here)

by Nicole Villeneuve

Sad news came out of the East Coast this morning when it was announced that Rita MacNeil had died at the age of 68. The cause is said to be complications from surgery.

The acclaimed Cape Breton singer/songwriter (and feminist!) hosted a successful variety show, Rita and Friends, that ran on the CBC from 1994-1997, a time we’ve already pointed out as a rich time for Canrock. We were obviously in deep on that stuff and obviously watched it and even perhaps remember Rita best for bringing our bands (our bands) to an audience we never imagined at the time. Here are some of our favourite moments. RIP, Rita.

Sloan, “Penpals”

That intro! Those outfits (that’s two days in a row for us posting about your weird on-TV outfits, SLOAN.)! All this East Coast reverie is just so lovely.

16 Canadian musical moments from ‘Open Mike with Mike Bullard’

--taken from: Aux

by Mark Teo

It wouldn’t be accurate to say we enjoyed Mike Bullard, but in his six seasons on the Canadian airwaves, we did the quintessentially Canuck thing: We tolerated him. Because no, we didn’t like him, per se—his monologues, rife with lukewarm quips about Canadian politicians, awkward crowd participaction, and half-wit sports jokes, all made Bullard feel like an Etobicoke-born Jay Leno. He had solid-yet-forgettable guests like, in this episode, Susan Ormiston and Rick Bronson. (Um, who?) And his delivery and flat comedic style certainly rubbed some the wrong way, including YouTube commenter Otto Pataki, who wrote that “This show is such fucking torture! Hell I wouldn’t fucking force the Sandy Hook shooter to watch this! That would be fucking cruel!” His words, not ours.

But we don’t mean to pick on Bullard. Because, if there was anything worthwhile about his shows, it was his musical guests: Though he frequently maintained he knew nothing about the bands on his show, he pulled then-A list interviews like Coal Chamber, Judas Priest, and Sevendust. (Someone on the show evidently dug metal.) And the performers he brought in were some of Canrock’s greatest—and sifting through his show’s live archives, as we’ve done, feels like witnessing Big Shiny Tunes performed live. Don’t believe us? We’ll let the vids do the talking. (And don’t forget to check out our Jonovision Jonopalooza post for similarily sweet Canrock mems.)

Sloan—“If It Feels Good Do It”

Pretty Together was widely considered Sloan’s departure into pensive, dare-we-say grown-up territories. The perfect counterbalance to Chris Murphy and co.’s newfound maturity? Playing the album’s first single, “If It Feels Good Do It,” decked out in full animal costumes. Here’s the performance in mesmerizing .gif format.
