Sloan Revisit 1999 with New Live Bootleg Album

by Alex Hudson
Late last year, Sloan paid tribute to to the '70s and '80s tradition of bootlegged LPs by releasing a fan-recorded live album as a limited vinyl release. Now, the Canadian rock survivors are doing a similar thing with Australia 1999, an official bootleg that will be available starting Tuesday (June 12).
This live LP will be a little less exclusive than the prior official bootleg, with 500 hand-numbered blue vinyl copies (rather than just 300) being pressed. Whereas the last one was a fan recording, this one was captured live off the soundboard on October 23, 1999, at Goldman's in Sydney, Australia.
In a post on the band's website, Sloan member Jay Ferguson wrote, "Perhaps by now you know of my love for the 1970's-1980's 'bootleg' LP aesthetic. Due to the enthusiastic demand for the Is That All I Get? live in Winnipeg 1993 vinyl LP we released last autumn, I've been allowed to indulge once again in creating another limited edition artifact."
He added that the show was in support of 1999's Between the Bridges. "It was a pretty heavy guitar onslaught," he explained of the show. "One listen to Andrew and Patrick's twin guitar war during 'Sensory Deprivation' and you'll know what I'm talking about, mate."
In addition to a photocopied interview insert, vinyl buyers will receive a digital download of the LP, plus four bonus tracks that didn't make the cut: "People of the Sky," "Iggy and Angus," "The N.S." and "Sinking Ships."
The record will be sold through Sloan's official store starting Tuesday.
